A longish post for several purposes.
As I wrote a few days ago, I am trying to wrangle my bonus triangles into usable shape. My approach was to just square them up to the largest quarter inch that was workable. This resulted in a HUGE amount of 1.75" HSTs. I could use them in blocks that come out in some completely odd dimension, but I decided chevrons and zig zags might make a lot of sense, because I don't have to cut any 1.75" squares to go with them. Although I am sure the giant crumb bin would yield fodder for such an effort.
So, in the interest of being able to link up to the first Saturday of Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2019, here is what I have so far in the reds.
Very likely to be made into something holiday-ish for the end of 2019, because I also have a ton of green and white. And face it, you can't start too early planning for Christmas. I need new Christmas placemats, if nothing else....
But, there is a lot of red scrap goodness in my Quiltville Mystery for this year as well. The exciting reveal was on Friday, and I made my blocks and realize I don't love the way it looked. My original vision was to use golden shades of yellow, but I went too far in a direction that really reads as Blah! tan! Ewwwww! I was NOT happy.
Last night, I picked apart a good number of those blocks to excise the yuckier chevron shapes. and will replace them with brighter colors. Here you see what I removed, and the uncut strips and yardage I will replace them with. I will also make sure the white triangles for the new chevrons is bright white, and I think that should make the whole thing happier.
In conclusion, I think I would have mapped these four colors differently to the design if this hadn't been a mystery quilt, but it's all a learning experience and being part of a mystery quilt and something like RSC2019 is a good way to keep me productive in the quilting department.
So thanks to Louise, whose great blocks for RSC2018 inspired me to take this plunge, and to Angela for running the challenge. Have a scrap happy Saturday folks!

I took this closeup of one of the new blocks with a digital camera, since the camera on my LG android (what I usually use for blog photos) does not capture colors well. Everything looks a lot less murky in this closeup.

I love your Chevron blocks! Mystery quilts are a learning experience and sometimes I don't like the colors suggested, but when looking at your whole quilt, I really like your colors.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marti! These pure colors are not my usual preference, especially the primary red and yellow. That's why I tried to go to golden yellow (disaster!). Also I was trying to minimize the fabric I would need to purchase to participate in this adventure. I just have too much to get through. Sew more is the answer, huh?
ReplyDeleteMystery quilts can be a bit of a risk, but it sounds like you have a way of o fix the problem. Looking forward to lots of great scraps used in 2019
ReplyDeleteTurning your RED scraps for the RSC into (a portion of) new Christmas placemats is a lovely idea. Happy quilting!!
